One STEP up
The Jan/Feb issue of STEP magazine covered some of the Command X competition that I participated in. Not only did I get my sweet mug published in the magazine (about .25” tall), but there was also mention of this website at the end there. Click here to read the article (4.8 MB). Thanks to my good friend Jackie Stewart who scanned it.

Command X-citing
This year’s AIGA Design Conference in Denver provided me with the amazing opportunity to compete in their first annual Command X, a graphic design reality show. In front of 2500 professionals, I presented a new Denver Broncos Logo, and new packaging for Jimmy Dean’s Pancake Wrapped Sausages. We had a week to complete the logo redesign and less than a day for the packaging. My competition was 6 of the bravest designers under 27 that I have ever met. Big shout out to Nichelle Narcisi, the winner and a 24 year-old hero of mine, and to the two contestants that partied the hardest: Kelly Dorsey and Mike Burton, from Little Jacket. It was my first big design conference and although I only got to really enjoy one day of it, as I was competing the rest of the time, the speakers were everything from breath-taking to mind-blowing and everything in between. My greatest gratitude to AIGA, Michelle Stanek, the Command X Judges (Emily Oberman, Bonnie Siegler, Noreen Morioka, Brian Collins), and Michael Bieruit, our very colorful host, for this amazing opportunity. It was truly persective- and life-changing.

Command Z!
Today I found out that out of over 100 applicants, myself and 6 other contestants got chosen to compete in Command X, a graphic design reality show at the AIGA Design Confererece: NEXT in Denver Oct. 10-14. A huge honor, but then I realized that I have to solve design problems live and present them in front of thousands of professional designers and a couple of my design heros. Where’s the undo button?

06, 01, and 07
I started classes at Long Beach State right after high school in ’01. 06 years later, on 06.01.07, I graduated Cum Laude with a BFA in Visual Communication. I know this because ‘07-’01=06. If somehow I could find a moment between my senior show, graduation and my new job at Young and Rubicam Brands, all these numbers would make a great graduation announcement.

I will be participating in “Change, Please”, an art show about homelessness in Long Beach. It will be up at the Art Park in the Arts District of Long Beach on the evening of May 12th. More here: http://www.changepleaselb.com.
I will have several traditional portraits of some of the amazing women from the women’s shelter painted as the Matriarchs that they are. We won’t be asking for money, so just come out and see some art!

Italy, watch out for the class of ‘07
This year our senior trip is to Italy. We are working on a project with Landor in Milan. Our project is evolutionary packaging for a popular Italian line of body creams and other products called iColoniali, a sub-brand of J&E Atkinsons. Here is a glimpse of what I will be presenting.

Advertising Show
The first annual Advertising Show at Cal State Long Beach was a hit. Two of my campaigns (SciFi Channel & George Foreman Grill) could be seen displayed at the Gatov Galleries on Campus. It was judged by creatives from several big advertising agencies in LA. Special thanks go to Mariam Farooq, who put the show on, and Michael Whitlow, everyone’s favorite advertising teacher.

I Never Win Anything!
The Designory in Long Beach and Graficos Burti in Brazil are sending me to Sao Paulo for a press check in February. I’m very excited to both go to Brazil and to get some of my ideas about “the power of numbers” printed in GD Burti’s annual book that shows off their printing techniques. There are going to be some really unique print effects and techniques applied to this book and to my 4 spreads in it, so stay tuned for pictures.

becaschools.org
BECA’s new identity is up and running at http://www.becaschools.org. They are looking for volunteers to teach English among other things to children in Honduras. If you or someone you know is looking for a gratifying travel experience, visit the website for info. From what I hear, the children will really be the ones teaching you. (I couldn’t resist!)

Does the Gingerbread World Lack Imagination?
Pictures of my 2006 Holiday promo are up. I sent out boxes of gingerbread cookies shaped like the clouds from elaineinspired.com to launch my website. I had to bake hundreds of cookies! I hear they were good. Plus, it was nice to do something creative in a completely different medium than I’m used to.. dough!

‘Tis the Season...
...to do good stuff for others. Recently, I’ve been working with BECA, Bilingual Education for Central America, on a new identity for their non-profit organization which set out to help educate underprivileged children in Honduras and other places in Central America. Click here for a preliminary look at what in progress.
